The project comprises the renovation and extension of the existing auditorium building to transform it into a cultural center.
The ambition is not only to create a space where all kinds of artistic performances are possible -opera, concerts, classic or alternative theater, i.e.- but also a place for students to simply come and interact. A place open to everyone that feels inviting, warm and familiar. A place where synergies and new connections are possible.
The extension building has an important role to play as it will be a magnet to attract students. The new building has a glassed facade that extends all over the perimeter maximizing the visual interaction between interior and exterior.
The public space around the building is currently monotonous and generic. With the new building proposal, the public space is compressed into two distinctive zones. One related to the main entrance of the building and in clear relationship with the new green plaza -on top of the parking. The second space relates to the southeast crossroad, a very dynamic public space constantly crossed by students.
The existing auditorium is a well-designed building that simply has lost its original purpose as the existing equipment has got outdated. Therefore, the new extension volume wishes to respect and coexist with the original building rather than compete with it. This intention is projected as a one-level building entwined with the existing auditorium.
The main entrance of the new SNU Cultural Center is at the heart of the building, located in a central position between the multipurpose hall and the black box. This lobby can be accessed directly from the 1F and B1 levels.
