The residence of the Spanish ambassador house in Seoul was built in the mid-sixties by a wealthy family. The original residence configuration of the house represents a challenge to host the new institutional/private hybrid uses. The residence needs to create distinctive areas to celebrate events while keeping other areas private. The renovation works try to redefine the connection between public and private areas through small interventions. As the house presented structural problems, none of the existing wall partitions could be removed or change their location. Therefore, all the program uses should be redefined by a material change strategy. Noble woods for the main staircase, i.e., redefine its use and intuitively connect the public first floor with a new public use on the mostly private second level.
The renovation works include all the landscape and swimming pool areas, structural reinforcement of the building, new mechanical and electrical systems and all interior finishing materials.
